Default Fourth of July fireworks shuttered at key military bases

Quote:
Money woes have led at least three military bases to cancel Fourth of July fireworks, a move that will save up to $100,000, one general estimated.

Among the bases that are canceling the shows, the Army Times reported: Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and the Army’s Fort Bragg, both in North Carolina; the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga.; Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina; Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii; and New Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry at Camp Lejeune said that the canceled show would “ensure that we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing” and that last year’s July Fourth show cost the base about $100,000.

But not everyone is applauding the cost-cutting move, likening it to a Christmas without Santa.

“I know fireworks might seem silly to other people,” said one woman whose husband is a master gunnery sergeant. “But what is the Fourth of July without fireworks? It’s just a bummer for the kids. It’s like the Grinch stealing Christmas.”

And, of course, all of this occurs as obama, michelle, their children, michelle’s mother and michelle’s niece sightsee around Africa on a fabulous $100 million vacation that is paid for by you and me. Priorities, priorities .

Because the sequester was unilaterally implemented by Obama?

If the GOP did not want DoD to be part of the sequester they should not have agreed to it - nothing passes without the consent of the GOP House

The sequester was all obamas idea.

Quote:
Obama's sequester still being blamed on GOP by desperate, dishonest Dems

Brent Budowsky, yet again, takes to this space to defend President Obama and Democrats in Congress when they fail, lie, and try to pull the wool over our eyes and disregard the truth.

"It was a mistake for Republicans to push the sequester and for the president and Democrats to surrender to the sequester happening without even making a fight," Budowsky writes in a piece defending Paul Krugman.

Just what part of "the sequestration was Obama's idea" is so hard for Obama defenders to understand? Obama initiated it, hoping it would be more of a threat that would force Republicans in Congress to roll over.

They called his bluff. He then sent Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to stand in front of reporters and lie to them at the White House, claiming teachers would get pink slips. He sent his Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to lie about the sequester resulting in longer TSA lines at airports.

So confident was Obama and his defenders that their lapdogs in the media would repeat the lie that the sequester was the GOP's idea, and therefore any pain felt would be blamed on the GOP, they barely even tried to cover their tracks. As evidence, look at that smoking-gun email from a USDA employee: “It is our opinion that however you manage that reduction [the sequester cuts], you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.”

That the sequester was Obama's idea, and that he swore to block any attempts to stop it is undeniable. Any statements to the contrary in this space or any other news organization should be challenged and corrected. However, the more likely scenario is obfuscation and attacks which have nothing to do with the issue at hand, which is the usual bitter, tired and quite predictable response from the left. Yawn.

The soldiers are always getting f*cked. I have so many stories... Bush, Sr., Slick Willie, GW, and Obama. Any funds that are given to the military rarely reach those who actually serve.

I has gotten better (than it was a decade or so ago), but the soldier is constantly being f*cked over. So have the police... and firemen... and teachers... et cetera.

Spending thousands or perhaps millions on fireworks displays on our dime is a waste of money. As Teegre already said, I'd rather see that money go to something that actually benefits the community and the children.
