Default Ilya Kovalchuk Retires From NHL

Let's all take this moment to point and laugh at the Devil's. They aren't going to take a big cap penalty for this, but for all the crap and fines he put the team through, which included draft pick losses. And also the fact that he did this right after the draft and free agency. Not confirmed yet, but he's likely to take a contract with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL.

The general manager wouldn't discuss the salary cap implications for the team, but, because of Kovalchuk's long-term contract, the Devils enjoyed a salary cap advantage of about $4 million over the first three seasons. Under the collective-bargaining agreement's cap advantage recapture clause, the Devils will have to pay back that amount over the last 12 years of the contract. That would mean a hit of about $330,000 a season.

The retirement announcement comes six days after the opening of the free agent market, meaning the Devils don't have the option of trying to add players through free agency.

Look at these eyebrows. These are attack eyebrows! They could take off bottle caps!

One of the biggest retirements in sports history.

Barry Sanders of the NHL.
