Default Do they go too far with wanting local talent?

Time after time after time, while watching a Steeler game, I hear them will say "Player X grew up right here in the Pgh area." I mean, I think it's fine if a player is from Western PA. It's cute. But the Rooneys seem to take it too far. There is nothing special about people who grew up in WPA. I am from there. There doesn't appear to anything inherently advanced about people from the area. They are no more likely to be better football players. But the Steelers fall all over themselves - seemingly - to sign players from PA.

Even in that game on Sat. I kept hearing them say how so and so was from PA or Pgh. It is no coincidence. The Rooneys think that people from WPA are some how magical. I guess since they grew up there, they most likely grew up as Steeler fans. But, does that really make any substantive difference? I really doubt it. So why are they so obsessed with getting players from PA? You think they might be a little out of balance in this area?

So who on the roster right now is from PA?

Moye
Gradkowski
Charlie Batch - former
Woods?
Stephens-Howling - went to Pitt
Justin Brown - went to PSU
Malecki
Ferrell
Heyward

Who else? Do you see any other teams obsessing over signing players from their geographic area?

It's not just the Steelers who want players from W.PA. I'm sure you know at least a little bit about the football history here, that goes back before the Steelers were ever popular. We live in a football hotbed, and a lot of players are bred here.

And there's also a reason it's called the "Cradle of Quarterbacks":

Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Jim Kelly, Matt Schaub, Johnny Unitas, Bruce Gradkowski, Marc Bulger, George Blanda, Johnny Lujack, Jeff Hostetler, Gus Frerotte, Willie Thrower, Warren Heller, Johnny Gildea, Tyler Palko, Alex Van Pelt, Sandy Stephens, Terry Hanratty, Mike McMahon, Major Harris, Matt Cavanaugh, Chuck Fusina, Rod Rutherford, Ted Marchibroda, Babe Parilli, John Hufnagel, Tom Sherman, Richie Lucas, Boyd Brumbaugh, Scott Zolak, Anthony Morelli, Ed Matesic, Tom Clements, Coley McDonough, Charley Seabright and current Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch all hail from within a 50 mile radius of the city.

Also include guys like Bill Cowher, Mike McCarthy, Marvin Lewis, Jim Haslett, Marty Shottenheimer, Mike Ditka, Bob Ligahesky, Todd Haley, and many more.

Wikipedia has a nice list of players for the area... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ropolitan_area

And here's the 60 greatest players from W.PA. http://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articl...istory/3003587

........................

There's a good reason teams want players from this area. They always have.

Oh, and we also have 3 female football teams. So the girls know what they're doing too.

SCmom, to be fair, WPA _used_ to be a hotbed for football players. And it still is to an extent. But most all of the names you listed are from other generations - from back in the day when there was more reason to live in WPA, back when the steel industry was still the backbone of the entire area. Now, with manufacturing almost dead, there seems to be less success in the whole area. And our college teams are near toothless compared to teams in the south and out west. You want to find the best players, comb FL, TX, etc. Those are now where you find the most talent.

But, regardless, that isn't really my point. The main point, or question, is "Do the Rooneys put too much value in signing players who grew up in the area?" I just think they place too much weight on it. Why care about where they grew up at all? Why not just consider that irrelevant and make the decisions purely on the person and his talent? Is there any tangible facts that make adding players from the region to be superior to players from FL? What would the logic be? They are OK with the weather? They don't find the area gray and boring? I just don't know what the factors would be. I grew up in WPA, and I still prefer the weather else where.

Obsessing? That's 9 people, one of whom isn't even on the roster anymore and none of which are starters. It could be argued that 4 - 5 of those guys will be fighting for a roster spot this month.

They get local talent because they can contact local scouts and get an honest, truthful assessment of talent without having to travel or tap into sources. It's a direct link.

i don't understand why you think the Rooneys care where their players grew up.

They are overly influenced by a player being a Steeler fan to begin with. Even Adams grew up a Steeler fan and they drafted him with that in mind. I think it's safe to say that players who grew up in the region means they are Steeler fans. You haven't noticed how often they seem to favor players who grew up in PA? Even with free agents they seem to be influenced. Stephens-Howling went to Pitt.

do you think the Rooneys favor local players, or the local media favors those players? I've never heard anything from the Rooneys to indicate they favor local players, I could be wrong though, but even if they've said a few things here and there I would take that as playing to the audience.
